Overview
This document will help you to configure your Mac Mail (built-in MacOS X software) e-mail client to work with the mail.msu.edu e-mail system.
Compatible MacOS version: OS 10.5.x (Leopard)
Note: These instructions do not apply to Mac Mail for OS 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, or OS 10.4 Tiger; separate Mail documentation is available for those versions of the OS.

Before You Begin
You must already have a valid MSU NetID to access mail.msu.edu e-mail.Step 1: Create your e-mail account
- Start Mail.
- If it is the first time you are setting up your account, a wizard will walk you through the steps. If the wizard does not appear you can open up the wizard by going to the File menu, then Add Account to launch the wizard.
- Fill out the requested information.
- Click Continue.
Step 2: Incoming Mail Server
- Enter the following information:
- Account Type: IMAP
- Description: [Optional, may be left blank]
- Incoming Mail Server: mail.msu.edu
- User Name: [Your NetID]
- Password: [Your password]
- Click Continue.
Step 3: Incoming Mail Security
- The Incoming Mail Security window will only show up if the attempt to detect the settings fails. If you do see it, enter the following information.
- Check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- Select Passwords for Authentication.
- Click Continue.
Step 4: Outgoing Mail Server
- To configure the Outgoing Mail Server, enter the following information.
- Description: [Optional, may be left blank]
- Outgoing Mail Server: mail.msu.edu
- Check the "Use only this server" box.
- Check the "Use Authentication" box.
- User Name: [Your Netid]
- Password: [Your Password]
- Click Continue.
Step 5: Outgoing Mail Security
- The Outgoing Mail Security window will only show up if the attempt to detect the settings fails. If you do see it, enter the following information.
- Check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
- Select Passwords for Authentication.
- Click Continue.
Step 6: Account Summary
- This section summarizes the settings that you have made. It should look like the graphic below.
- Check the "Take account online" box to receive mail as soon as you click Create.
- Click Create.
If You Can't Delete Messages
Some users may see an error message that says, "The IMAP command 'UID copy' (to delete messages) failed for the mailbox 'inbox' server error in IMAP." If this happens, try unchecking the option that says "Store deleted message on the server" in the account preferences.
Additional Incoming Settings
For additional incoming server settings
- Click on the Mail menu
- Click on Preferences
- Click on Accounts and select the appropriate account
- In the right-hand section, click on Advanced
- Make sure the settings are the same as in the picture below
Additional Outgoing Settings
For additional outgoing server settings
- Click on the Mail menu
- Click on Preferences
- Click on Accounts and select the appropriate account
- In the right-hand section, look for the Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP) dropdown.
- In the dropdown, select Edit Server List...
- Click on Advanced
- Make sure the settings are the same as the picture below
