Mac OSX iChat "insufficient bandwidth" errors - TB7406

This item provides information on these topics:

Overview

This article will contain information concerning Mac OSX 10.4's built in iChat instant messaging software, and its related error messages.

Disconnected from Video Chat because: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference

Under certain circumstances, you may be unable to start or maintain an audio or video chat using iChat 3.0 (included with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" and Mac OS Server 10.4) due to "insufficient bandwidth." This can occur even though the previous version of iChat (2.1) worked. You may see one of the following messages, depending on the type of chat you selected:

Disconnected from Video Chat because: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.

Disconnected from Audio Chat because: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference

The ATS Help Desk has identified this as a misleading error message, given that there is sufficient bandwidth for the connection, however other settings and or programs might be responsible for the error.

Apple has provided suggestions for support for this problem here: Mac OS X 10.4, iChat: "Insufficient bandwidth" messages

Note:We are unable to provide support for the iChat software or for video chat in general beyond these suggestions. Please contact Apple for further issues with your iChat software, or for help with video chat/conferencing.
