Overview

This article will explain how to download and setup the FileZilla FTP client to access your AFS space.

Downloading FileZilla

Go to filezilla-project.org and download the version appropriate for your Operating System.

Installing FileZilla

Navigate to where you downloaded the setup file and double click on it. You will be prompted to choose the components you want to install (our recommendation is to select all including "Desktop Icon") and then agree to the license for the program. When you are done click Next.Step1

Using FileZilla

Once the program has finished installing an icon for FileZilla should appear on your desktop, double-click on it to open it. In the Host field, type in: afs.msu.edu. In the Username field, enter your NetID, and in the Password field, enter your password. Then click on the QuickConnect button.Step2

Accessing your Course AFS Space

Connecting to your AFS space sends you to your home folder by default. In order to access Course AFS space you can change the address in the Remote Site field to navigate to that specific course folder. The format should be /afs/msu/course/DEPARTMENT/COURSENUMBER/ an example pictured below would be /afs/msu/course/cse/101/ Once you have entered in your desired path, hit Enter and that should take you to your course space.course

Accessing your AFS Space from behind a Router/Firewall

FileZilla has the ability to connect to the AFS space from behind a router or firewall.
  1. Click on File and select Site Manager
  2. If you do not already have a listing under "My Sites", click the New Site button.
  3. Use the following settings:
    • Host: afs.msu.edu
    • Servertype: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
    • Logontype: Normal
    • User: your MSUnetID
    • Password: your MSUnet password
  4. Click on the Transfer Settings tab and select Passive
  5. Click the OK button to save your settings and exit, or click the Connect button to connect.

Accessing your AFS Space using SSL Encryption

Filezilla allows users to connect using TLS/SSL Encryption. The encryption keeps your username and password as well as the data fully secure during the connection. To use SSL encryption with AFS:
  1. Click on File and select Site Manager
  2. If you do not already have a listing under "My Sites", click the New Site button.
  3. Use the following settings:
    • Host: afs.msu.edu
    • Servertype: FTPES-FTP over explicit TLS/SSL
    • Logontype: Normal
    • User: your MSUnetID
    • Password: your MSUnet password
  4. Click on the Transfer Settings tab and select Passive
  5. Click the OK button to save your settings and exit, or click the Connect button to connect.
