AFS: Managing Access to Personal Pages - TB683

This item provides information on these topics:

  1. Overview
  2. Login to AFS
  3. Restricting Access (Manage Permissions)
  4. Restoring Access to Public

Overview

Access to files and folders stored on the AFS system can be controlled. A typical use of this control would be setting the permissions for users to be able to see web pages stored in your web folder. Instructions on how to allow public access to your web pages are provided below.

Login to AFS

  1. Using your web browser, go to http://afs.msu.edu.
  2. Log in using your MSU NetID and password. The Main Menu screen displays.

Restricting Access (Manage Permissions)

The menu items on the left provide a variety of services, including the ability to manage (restrict) access to your web pages (also known as "managing permissions").

The default is to allow "Anyone to view pages through the web". The steps below outline how to restrict access to your web page(s) or to a subfolder(s) in your web folder.

Please note: You must use the facility built in to afs.msu.edu to set the restrictions for them to work correctly. Manual changes may not provide the desired results. (The contextual help pages do not make this clear).

To restrict access:

  1. Click the "Manage personal web page permissions" link located on the left of the screen. Proceed to the next step if you want to restrict access to your entire web space.

To restrict access to a subfolder within your web folder, use the directory links on the left to navigate to that folder.

  2. Select the restriction you want to set:
    • Public (default) - Allow anyone to view
    • MSU only - require a log in with access restricted to users with a valid MSU netID
    • Specific users only - same as above, except restricted to specific users or a group of users defined within afs.msu.edu.
  3. Click the Change web access button to make the change.

Restoring Access to Public

Once you have restricted access, you will have to repeat the steps above to restore Public access. Manual changes to the "permissions" will not work properly.
