Mapping AFS: Windows XP - TB664

This item provides information on these topics:

Overview

These instructions are for mapping your AFS Space, on-campus (not off-campus), onto your computer for Windows XP users only.

Before beginning this process you should enable clear text passwords for your operating system. This patch will unencrypt passwords, allowing them to be read by the MSU server. Once this patch is downloaded, please restart your computer and follow the directions below. Without this patch installed and the computer restarted, these directions may not work properly.

The ATS Help Desk recommends Netfiles as the preferred method of accessing the AFS system. More information about the Netfiles service can be found in techbase article TB7897. We suggest trying Netfiles, if you are having trouble with mapping your AFS Space.

Step 1: Select Map Network Drive

  • Right-click on "My Computer".
  • Click on "Map Network Drive".

Step 2: Select the Drive Letter

  1. Select P: (or drive of your choice) from the "Drive" drop-down menu.
  2. In the "Folder:" text field, type \\afs.msu.edu\[MSU NetID] in lowercase letters.
    • For example, if Sparty were mapping his AFS space, he would enter \\afs.msu.edu\sparty where "sparty@msu.edu" is his MSU E-mail address.
  3. Check the box next to "Reconnect at logon" if you want your AFS drive mapped automatically everytime you log onto Windows.
  4. Click on "Connect using a different user name".

Step 3: Logging In

  • In the "Connect As..." window, enter your MSU NetID and password
  • When finished, click OK.

Step 4: Finish

  • Click the "Finish" button.
  • Your AFS space should now be mapped, and appear as drive P: (or whatever drive letter you specified in Step Two) within My Computer.

Mapping Course Space (Part 1)

For users with special permissions to access course webspace (access is set up internally by the department), you may map a network drive to the course AFS space by replacing \\afs.msu.edu\[MSU NetID] with \\afs.msu.edu\root in the "Folder" text field during Step 2 above.

During this step of mapping course space, you should see a screen similar to the following:

Mapping Course Space (Part 2)

Once you have connected to the root directory, you will then need to browse to the course space. To do so:
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Double-click to open the drive that was created in Part 1.
  3. Double-click on the "msu" folder.
  4. Double-click on the "course" folder.
  5. Double-click on the course abbreviation folder (ie: "cse").
  6. Double-click on the course number folder (ie: 101).
You should now be connected to your course AFS space. If you followed the examples provided above, you will be connected to the following course space: \\afs.msu.edu\msu\course\cse\101

Additional Information

If mapping doesn't work, use a different method of accessing your AFS space.
See TB2468 for other options.

Special Note for Users using a Static IP address

If your computer is using static IP address and you want to map your AFS Space, you must ensure that you have all the correct settings entered. For configuration information for static IP addresses, please see TB464. Note: Failure to have the correct configuration will result in the AFS mapping to fail.
