MSUnet Wireless: Guest Access - TB4254

This item provides information on these topics:

Overview

MSUnet Wireless offers Guest access to affiliated guests of MSU. These instructions will show you how to get connected to the Guest SSID and also explains what services you will be able to use while connected.

Important note on limited guest access

General MSUnet Wireless Guest access is currently limited to web (http), secure web (https) services; as of 10/3/05, outbound TCP e-mail client (POP, IMAP, SMTP and LDAP) services; and as of early December 2005, VPN (TCP/UDP) services. No other Internet services can be used. (See Kellogg Center section below regarding access in that location).

This means that you can view webpages (like http://help.msu.edu and secure webpages like https://www.gmail.com), and can also use an e-mail client that accesses the following outbound TCP ports:

  • POP3 110
  • POP3s 995 (TLS/SSL)
  • IMAP 143
  • IMAP3 220
  • IMAPs 993 (TLS/SSL)
  • LDAP 389
  • LDAPs 636 (TLS/SSL)
  • SMTPs 465 (TLS/SSL)
  • SMTP 587
VPN access is also available via the following ports:
  • TCP port 500
  • UDP port 500
  • TCP port 1723
  • UDP port 1723
  • UDP port 4500 (secure)
  • UDP port 10000
Additional Applications
  • Secure Shell (SSH) port 22
Please contact your normal Internet Service Provider with questions regarding settings that need to be used with your e-mail or VPN client.

It is strongly recommended that you enable your internet firewall.

Kellogg Center guest access

As of May 19, 2009, guests in the Kellogg Center will have special access via the SSID MSUnet Kellogg Guest. Access using this SSID will be open and without the port blocks referenced in the previous section.

Kellogg guests will still need to follow the general steps below for access, including agreeing to the applicable wireless net access user agreement when prompted.

Step 1: Connect to the Guest SSID

To connect to the MSUnet Wireless system as a guest, you need to connect to a separate SSID than the normal MSUnet Wireless. The non-Kellogg Center guests connect to MSUnet Wireless Guest. Kellogg Center users connect to MSUnet Kellogg Guest. (commencing May 9,2009) .

For information on how to connect to a SSID, please refer to the documentation for connecting to the standard MSUnet Wireless service. This can be found here.

Step 2: MSUnet Wireless Guest Access login

Once you have configured your network settings to connect to the MSUnet Wireless Guest SSID, you will then need to agree to abide by the MSU Statement of Acceptable Use in order to access the MSUnet Wireless Guest network. Follow the instructions below:

  1. Launch your web browser.
  2. Browse to http://wireless.msu.edu/. If your browser displays the requested webpage then you are already connected. Otherwise, you will be redirected to the MSU Wireless Guest Access page.
  3. If prompted, accept the certificate "for this session only"
    • Note: different browsers display the certificate uniquely. For examples of what you should see when viewing a certificate, please click here.
  4. Read through the Agreement, and then click the I Agree button.
guestlogin

Successful login

If you logged in successfully, you should see the following popup screen: login-out

Logging out (optional)

Once you successfully login, you should see a pop-up window similar to the one above (if you have disabled pop-ups in your system or web browser, you will need to re-enable them; or alternatively, browse to https://wireless.msu.edu/logout.html to see the window above).

This popup window is intended to remain in the background to provide an easy means for you to logout. It is not necessary to do so, but if you wish to logout at any time, click the Logout button. You will see the following popup screen. As it states, to complete the log off process and to prevent access to unauthorized users, you must close all browser windows and quit the browser application. Once you do this, you must log back in (starting at Step 2 above) to gain network access again. logout
