Overview
The following article highlights problems encountered so far with the release of service pack 2 for Windows XP.List of programs with known problems
A list of programs with known problems with service pack 2 is available hereOpenAFS
According to information at openafs.org, there are serious compatibility issues with all but the latest version of OpenAFS. Information from an article at openafs.org is provided below:IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WINDOWS XP SP2 AND ALL PREVIOUS RELEASES OF OPENAFS FOR WINDOWS
There is a serious incompatibility between Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and all previous versions of AFS for Windows whether released by IBM/Transarc or OpenAFS.org. The afslogon.dll which provides the Integrated Logon functionality violates newly imposed security restrictions. These restrictions cause network operations performed during DLL process attachment to block forever. This will prevent proper loading and unloading of user profile information. Depending on the version of AFS, the boot cycle of Windows XP SP2 may fail to complete or may take a long time. If your system fails to boot after installation of service pack 2, boot into safe mode, and remove open afs, and then restart your system.
All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the 1.3.70 release prior to the installation of Windows XP SP2. If OpenAFS for Windows cannot be installed, all references to afslogon.dll should be removed from the system. If present the following registry key should be deleted
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows_NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Notify\AfsLogon
In addition, the string "TransarcAFSDaemon" must be removed from the "Provider Order" value in the following keys:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder
Doing so will avoid the incompatibility and will disable the integrated logon functionality.
Information on all versions of OpenAFS can be found at http://www.openAFS.org
MSU Notes:
Two situations have been observed so far at MSU.
Situation 1:
After upgrading to Service Pack 2 the system displays an open afs error message after attempting to startup for several minutes and then stops in the middle of the startup process. The solution for this behavior was to reboot in safe mode, remove the OpenAFS program, reboot, and then download an install the latest version of OpenAFS.
Situation 2:
After upgrading to Service Pack 2 the system took an extremely long time to Startup. The solution for this behavior was to remove the program, restart, and then download and install the latest version of open afs.
Style XP
There is an option in Style XP to modify the boot options of the program. When this is modified, serious issues can arise, including inability to boot the machine. Following the Windows XP Knowledge Base article seems to complicate the problem further.Symantec Issues

Situation:
You would like more information regarding the Windows® XP Service Pack 2 release from Microsoft and whether your Symantec Norton products are compatible with Service Pack 2.
Solution:
Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a major security-focused operating system upgrade that includes an enhanced Windows firewall and a utility (Windows Security Center) that monitors the state of your computer's security.
Symantec will release a product update to provide native support for the Windows Security Center status utility found in SP2. This update will be available worldwide over the coming weeks and will enable Symantec products to communicate their status to the Windows Security Center utility.
Symantec encourages its customers to install the product update prior to installing SP2 in order to avoid incorrect reporting from Windows Security Center. Symantec’s consumer customers will receive notification from their Norton product when the update is available. Consumers will be able to download the SP2 product update by clicking the LiveUpdate icon found in their Norton security software.
The SP2 product update for English versions of Norton products will be available beginning August 10, 2004. At that time, Symantec will provide detailed information about SP2 and compatibility with Norton products, including frequently asked questions (FAQs) and support documentation. Please check back to http://service.symantec.com/xpinfo on August 10, 2004.
