Overview

NetPrint allows you to print to specific MSU printers from anywhere in the world (when connected directly to the MSU Network or through MSU SSL VPN) using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). In order to use this service, steps must be taken to set up your computer to communicate with this protocol.

Instructions for Windows XP and Windows 2000 are shown below, and include a tool that will do some of the work for you. Instructions for other supported Windows operating systems are also included.

Once you have initially configured your computer to use NetPrint, you can skip to step 13 for instructions on how to print to the MSU Netprint printer you've set up.

Setup for Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME

Microsoft has released an Internet Printing Client for most older versions of Windows. It is currently untested with NetPrint, and may or may not support the required features needed for use. The following information is provided for reference only, and is not guaranteed to work properly.

If you have success (or failure) with these tools, please provide feedback so that we can tailor our instructions to reflect the information.

Windows 95

Download the Internet Printing Client from Microsoft here

Windows 98

Download the Internet Printing Client from Microsoft here

Windows ME

Other unsupported operating systems

NetPrint is built on the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) standard, and will work with any IPP client that is able to support authentication and SSL.

Linux, Solaris, or other UNIX systems can use CUPS as an IPP client.

To use NetPrint with another operating system, or to set up NetPrint manually, you will need the following information:

  • Printer location: https://netprint.msu.edu:30443/printers/netprint
  • Printer type: HP Laserjet 8100 Series PC
  • Username: Your MSU NetID
  • Password: Your MSU NetID password
  • Print to MSU Netprint printer

    1. Print your desired pages, selecting MSU Netprint as your printer
    2. In your web browser, log into netprint.msu.edu with your MSUNet ID and password
    3. Select the desired building and printer, then click Print next to the document you wish to print. You may need to purchase e-tokens if you do not have any.
Important Note: You must log into netprint.msu.edu within 15 minutes of sending the print job, to associate the print with your NetID. Failure to do this will result in the print being lost. Once it is associated, you can then select the appropriate printer from which to print.

Note: An E-token(s) is required for each printed side. A double-sided page with printing on the front and back requires twice the e-tokens as a single printed side.
