System Status Information (http://servicestatus.msu.edu) - TB3059

This item provides information on these topics:

Overview

Academic Technolgy Services (ATS) maintains a web page at http://servicestatus.msu.edu that displays status information about services that are provided by the ATS and AIS sections of Library Computing & Technology to the MSU campus. Although the primary focus of this system is intended for these services, it may on occasion be used to display information about other campus services if an event creates calls to LC&T Help Desks or if the event is critical enough to affect a major portion of campus.

The Service Status web page contains three sections. The first section displays current alerts. The second section displays maintenance that is scheduled for production services and the third section displays recent activity (past alerts and scheduled maintenance) within the last 72 hours with a link to view activity older than 72 hours.

Information appears at http://servicestatus.msu.edu immediately after information is entered into the Service Status system. Critical elements of this information are also displayed via an RSS feed (with 5 minute delay) on the home pages of http://help.msu.edu, http://computing.msu.edu and https://angel.msu.edu. These feeds can be used to display service status information in a variety of formats.

Current Alerts Section

The "Current Alerts" section informs customers (and staff members) of service outages or scheduled maintenance events that are currently affecting computing at MSU. Current alerts appear in this section as soon as they are entered and disappear as soon as they are closed. An entry also automatically appears in this section during the time when a Scheduled Maintenance event is taking place (with a description of "scheduled maintenance in progress [see below]"). Additional information in this section is provided by displaying the last update date and time in red if an update has been made to this event within the last 15 minutes.

Scheduled Maintenance Section

Production services are routinely scheduled for maintenance or upgrades. When this occurs, an entry will normally be made into the Service Status System at least one week in advance. Maintenance that is critical or contains minor changes that will cause "no visible user changes" may be entered with less advance notice if deemed appropriate by a service sponsor.

Recent Activity Section

Once an "Alert" has been corrected or a "Scheduled Maintenance" has been performed, the information will continue appear in the "Recent Activity" section of the web page for 72 hours. After that period of time it will be available from a "view past activity" link in that section.

Identification of Problems and Critical Events

Problems with services are identified in a variety of methods.
  • A call may be placed to an LC&T Help Desk
  • An AIS or ATS staff member may notice a problem with service monitoring tools
  • A service sponsor may recognize a problem
In each instance staff members must quickly identify the problem and determine whether a critical event has occurred. Problems that are "system-wide" and/or affect a large number of customers are entered into the Service Status System so customers and help desks can be quickly and properly informed.

Sites Where Service Status Information is Displayed

Information appears at http://servicestatus.msu.edu/ immediately after it is entered into the Service Status system. Portions of this information are also displayed via RSS feeds (with 5 minute delay) on the home pages of several campus web pages including http://computing.msu.edu, http://help.msu.edu, and https://angel.msu.edu.

The information that is displayed on these pages is customized to display the portions of the service status information that the site owners feel is important to the viewers of their web sites (i.e. only mentioning problems related to Angel on the Angel website).
