Overview

Note that the statewide Michnet dialup service will be discontinued on July 2, 2007. For the time being, MSU will continue provide local dial-up access in East Lansing. Refer to the article MichNet dial-up services will be terminated on July 2, 2007 for more info.

This document will help you set up MSU dial-up access on your PC running the Windows XP Operating System.

Step 1: Start Menu

  1. Click on "Start"
  2. Click on "Control Panel"

Step 2a: Go to Network Connections

  • If you see the "Classic view" (White background), then double-click "Network Connections" and skip to Step 3.
  • If you see the "Category view" (Blue background with "Pick a category" at the top), then click "Network and Internet Connections" and proceed to Step 2b.

Step 2b: Go to Network Connections

If you are using the "Category View," then click "Network Connections" and proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Network Connections

Inside the "Network" control panel, click on "Create a New Connection."

Step 4: New Connection Wizard

The New Connection Wizard Welcome Screen will appear. Click "Next."

Step 5: Network Connection Type

The Network Connection Type screen will appear. Select "Connect to the Internet," then click "Next."

Step 6: Getting Ready

The Getting Ready screen will appear. Select "Set up my connection manually," then click "Next."

Step 7: Internet Connection

The Internet Connection screen will appear. Select "Connect using a dial-up modem," then click "Next."

Step 8: Connection Name

The Connection Name screen will appear. Type MSU Dial-Up (or another name that is meaningful to you), then click "Next."8

Step 9: Phone Number

The Phone Number to Dial screen will appear. In the "Telephone Number" text box, type in the East Lansing local number, which is: 999-2678 (999-2MSU). If you are dialing from out of the Lansing area, you must use the area code (1-517-999-2MSU). This will charge you for long distance service. If you are in the MSU residence halls or apartments (Spartan Village, Cherry Lane, etc.) you will need to add the number prefix you use for dialing outside lines (ie: 7,999-2678; note the use of the comma).

Click "Next."

Step 10: Connection Availability

NOTE: This screen may not appear. If this is the case, proceed to Step 11.

The Connection Availability screen may appear. Select "Anyone's use" (if the connection is to be available to all persons logging in to your computer), then click "Next."

Step 11: Internet Account Information

The Internet Account Information screen will appear. Type your MSU NetID followed by @msu.edu (usually this will be the same as your MSU E-mail address) in the User name box and your password in the password and confirm password boxes.

Check or uncheck the 3 boxes beneath the Confirm Password box according to your own situation and preference.

Step 12: Completing the Wizard

The Completing the New Connection Wizard screen will appear. Verify the information on this screen. To change any incorrect information, click back until the appropriate screen appears. If all information is correct, click Finish.

**It is recommended that you check the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop checkbox. To test your connection, you will be asked to use this shortcut.

Step 13: Back to Network Connections

The Network Connections screen will now show your new dial-up connection. Right-click on the new connection and select "Properties."

Step 14: Connection Properties - Networking tab

The Connection Properties screen will now appear. Click on the "Networking" tab. Make sure "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" is checked and highlighted, then click on "Properties."

Step 15: TCP/IP General Properties

The Internet Protocol General Properties screen will appear. Verify that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Use the following DNS server addresses" are both checked. Ener 35.8.2.41 as the "Preferred DNS Server" and 35.8.98.43 as the "Alternate DNS Server," then click "Advanced."

Step 16: Advanced TCP/IP General Properties

The Advanced TCP/IP General Properties screen will appear. Make sure both check boxes are checked and click the "DNS" tab.

Step 17: Advanced TCP/IP DNS Properties

The Advanced TCP/IP DNS Properties screen will appear. Verify the DNS server addresses as shown below. Make certain the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)" option is selected, then click "Add." Enter msu.edu in the box that appears and click "Add." Click "Add" again to enter cl.msu.edu. When complete, click on the "WINS" tab.

Step 18: Advanced TCP/IP WINS Properties

The Internet Protocol WINS Properties screen will appear. Click "Add," then enter 35.8.2.25 in the WINS box that appears. Click "Add" to enter the setting. Repeat the procedure to add 35.8.2.69. Verify that the Internet Protocol WINS Properties tab appears as it does in the figure below. Then click "OK."

You will be returned to the General tab (in Step 15). Click "OK," which will return you to the Connection Properties screen (step 14). Click "OK" once again to complete the process. You may close any open windows to return to your Desktop.

Step 19: Testing your connection

Making sure that your computer's modem is connected to a working phone line, double-click the newly created icon on your Desktop. It will have the name, which you gave your new dialup connection. If you chose not to add the icon to your desktop, you can find the icon located on the Network Connections page found in Steps 1-2.

Make sure your password is entered correctly, then click "Dial" to make a connection to the Internet. You may open your browser once you are connected to test your connection.
