Overview

This document will help you to configure your Outlook Express E-mail client to work with the mail.msu.edu E-mail system.

Step 1: Create your Account (Part 1)

Start Outlook Express. On the "Tools" menu, click "Accounts."

Step 2: Create your Account (Part 2)

In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click "Add," and then click "Mail."

Step 3: Display Name

In the "Display Name" box, type the name that you want others to see when you send a message, and then click "Next."

Step 4: E-mail Address

In the "E-mail Address" box, type the E-mail address for the account that you are using (for example, "sparty@msu.edu"), and then click "Next."

Step 5: Server Names

Under "E-mail Server Names," choose the "IMAP" option, and then type mail.msu.edu for BOTH your incoming and outgoing E-mail servers. Click "Next."

Step 6: User Credentials

Enter your MSU NetID in the field "Account name" text field.
Make sure the box "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is blank.

Step 7: Configuring the Account Settings

To configure your E-mail, select the mail account and click on the "Properties" button on the right.

Step 8: Servers Configuration

Click on the "Servers" tab on the top and check the box "My server requires authentication."

Step 9: Advanced Configuration

  • Click on the "Advanced" tab on the top and check the boxes for outgoing and incoming mail labeled "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
  • Make sure that you change the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" number to 465, as shown in the screenshot below.
  • Click "OK" and you should be able to send and receive mail.

Step 10: IMAP Configuration

  • Click the "IMAP" tab.
  • In the "Sent Items path" text field, type "Sent"
  • Click "OK" and then "Close" (to close the Internet Account Box).

Step 11: IMAP Folders

Select the "Tools" pulldown menu and select "IMAP Folders."

Step 12: Show IMAP Folders (Part 1)

  1. Select the "All" tab
  2. Click "Inbox" (if the folders are not showing)
  3. Click the Show button for each folder you wish to display.
    • Your folder names may be different from the screenshot.

Step 13: Show IMAP Folders (Part 2)

  • Click the "Visible" tab and make sure your folders are showing.
  • Click "OK."

Step 14: Synchronization

  • Select "mail.msu.edu" in the left (if not already selected).
  • Under the Synchronization settings, check all the folders that you want content for and click the "Synchronize Account" button.
  • When done exit Outlook express and restart it and you should be able to send and receive E-mail.

Changing/resetting your saved password

If you change the password for your MSU NetID, use these instructions to also change the saved password within Outlook Express.
