  4. Activate your MSU NetID

Overview

The MSU NetID is used to provide access to the central email system and many other services on campus. A MSU NetID is a unique, alphanumeric identifier of two to eight characters and is generated automatically from the user's name. For example, Sparty may have an email address of "sparty@msu.edu" and thus, his NetID is "sparty." Individuals may change their NetIDs for a fee. Organizations should choose an ID which is representative of the organization's name. Academic Computing & Network Services reserves the right to reject any ID it deems inappropriate.

Who gets an MSU NetID?

MSU NetIDs and e-mail accounts are centrally funded and assigned to all current MSU faculty, staff, students (up to two years after graduation) and retirees. Other individuals or units may purchase additional NetIDs using a valid MSU departmental account number. Charges will be billed to your account on a monthly basis.

What if I don't remember my MSU NetID?

If you have already activated your MSU NetID and do not remember what it is, browse to http://www.msu.edu, then follow these steps:
  1. In the "Search MSU" text field, type in your name in the following format: Last, First.
  2. Click the selection for "People."
  3. Click "Go."

Any information for your account that has been made public, including your NetID, will be listed here. Information provided here is given by either the Human Resources department (Faculty/Staff/Retirees) or the Office of the Registrar (Students). NOTE: If a People Search does not produce any results for your NetID, it means your account isn't active. Refer to Techbase article 139 for information on reactivating your account.
