AFS: FTP Access Using Internet Explorer - TB146

This item provides information on these topics:

Overview

The directions below assume use of Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or above) and a working Internet connection.

NOTE: When connecting to the AFS server via Internet Explorer, it is possible that your NetID and password will be briefly visible on screen. If it does occur, it will be in plain text (not as asterisks). This happens when opening large documents, and will not be noticably visible for smaller files. Although the text is small and non-descript, it does present a minor security issue, so use caution when using Internet Explorer to access your AFS in public spaces. If you would like a more secure and permanent option please use OpenAFS. Instructions can be found on Techbase Article 6570

Additional Note: Course AFS Space is not accessible from the IE FTP method. If you need to access your course AFS space, Windows 2000/XP users can use the OpenAFS option which can be found in article 6570, or use an FTP client such as Filezilla (Windows). Mac users are advised to use Fetch for FTP access.

Step One: Browse to the FTP Site

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Type ftp://afs.msu.edu into the address bar
    • NOTE: if this does not work, you may try using ftp://netid@afs.msu.edu where netid is your MSU NetID.

Step Two: Login

  • A login box displays. Log in using your MSU NetID and password.

Step Three: Finished

  • Your MSU AFS space and its contents display.
  • You may now manipulate the files within your AFS space. To insert a file, simply drag the file over the area you'd like it to be copied and drop it.
  • This window acts as a window on your computer would.
  • Be sure to close this window when you are finished.
