New NetID password change policy as of July 17, 2006
In an effort to make MSU NetID passwords more secure, we have implemented tighter Kerberos password policies. The first of these changes concerns enforcement of MSU NetID password histories. As of July 17, 2006, a previous MSU NetID password can only be reused every fifth time; in other words, if you change or reset your MSU NetID password, you won't be able to change it to a password you have used the last four times you made the change. The Kerberos database will keep track of previous MSU NetID passwords and disallow their reuse until you have used four other, unique passwords previous to your current password change or reset. For example, if you change your MSU NetID password to "mdlE3pfb", you will not be able to change your password to "mdlE3pfb" again until the fifth time you need to change or reset your password.
Please note that there will be time restrictions set in place in order to deter rapid password changes; you must wait at least one hour between password changes. However, there are no plans to institute a global password expiration period at this time.
Password history error messages:
An attempt to change your password to any of the four previously used passwords in your password history will return the following error message: "The requested password is in your password history. Please use a different one. Error! Could not set your password."
Additionally, an attempt to change or reset your password sooner than one hour since the last change or reset, will return the following error message: "You must wait one hour before changing your password. Error! Could not set your password."
