Overview
Current MSU faculty, staff, students, and retirees receive centrally funded NetIDs so they can utilize various electronic resources and electronic mail. You should activate their MSU NetID and e-mail account even if you already have another e-mail account. If you are not eligible for a centrally funded account you may wish to purchase one using a valid MSU departmental account number and submitting an ATS MSU NetID Services Form.By setting up your MSU NetID you can use your account to:
- receive official communications from MSU that are sent to you via e-mail only
- publish a personal web page
- access dial-up services (where applicable)
- access public Computer Classrooms
- access electronic resources on campus.
- Should you choose to do so, you may forward e-mail sent to your MSU e-mail account to your personal e-mail account.
If you have difficulties activating your account this document provides detailed information about the activation process.

In your web browser, go to http://netid.msu.edu and click on "Activate my NetID."
Steps One and Two: Receiving Information and the SAU
Read through Steps 1 and 2 of the Activation page and check the boxes as needed.
NOTE: Make sure to read MSU's Statement of Acceptable Use (SAU), as it contains important information regarding what is considered allowable usage.

This portion states that MSU scans for viruses in your email. You will need to read the statement and check the acceptance box.
Step Four: Enter Your Personal ID and PIN
Depending on your MSU affiliation, you will fall into one of the following three categories:- Students: use your PID and PAN numbers to activate the netID. If you do not know what your PID or PAN are, please contact the Office of the Registrar at (517) 355-3300.
- Faculty/Staff: Use your MSU identification number and your PIN to activate the netID.
Note: For most users the ID number is your Social Security Number (using no hyphens or spaces). Some activation records instead require you to use your MSU Z-PID.
If you do not have your PIN, please click here for more information on how to request it (students do NOT use this form). - Other: use your MSU EX-PID and PIN to activate the netID.
