Internet Access and CD Burners

Many of the classroom computers on campus have CD burners. For a full list of Computer Classrooms that have CD burners, please visit http://attend.acns.msu.edu/computerLabs/locationTable.php.

Getting the TrendMicro Removal tool

NOTE: If you are receiving an error message when trying to run the sysclean.com tool, make sure that the pattern file .zip file has been extracted to the SAME directory as the sysclean.com file. For example, when looking in the folder that has the sysclean.com file, there should also be something similar to "lpt$vpn.911" and "whatsnew.txt" also included in the folder. If you do not see this, please extract the .zip file accordingly.

1. Go to a computer with BOTH internet access and a CD burner (many Computer Classrooms on campus have these). Also, be sure to bring a blank CD on which to save the files.

2. Create a new folder on your desktop by right clicking, selecting "New" and then selecting "Folder."

3. Download the Windows "pattern file" from http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp by left clicking on the link for "AS/400, S/390, Windows" and clicking Save. Save it to the folder created in Step 2.
NOTE: The pattern file is updated on a near daily basis. Please update the most current file each time you wish to run this tool.

4. For Windows 98/2000/ME or XP Home, download and install Winzip from www.download.com if you do not already have it installed. For Windows XP Pro, right click on the file, and select Extract All.
NOTE: When extracting, be sure that the location you select is the folder that you created in Step 2, not the default location given.

5. Download the sysclean.com tool at http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com and save it to the same folder that you extracted the pattern file to (the one created in Step 2).

6. Burn the Contents of the folder created in Step 2 to a CD and take this to the computer you need to clean.

7. Boot computer by restarting and repeatedly pressing the F8 key and selecting the "safe mode with networking" selection when prompted.

8. Copy the folder from the CD to the desktop of the computer that you need to clean.

9. Open that folder and double-click on the sysclean.com file.

10. Click "scan" to run the sysclean.com tool. This tool reads from the pattern file you downloaded to determine what needs to be repaired on your computer.

11. Run all Windows Critical Updates for your computer by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and clicking scan for updates.
NOTE: Any Critical Update is automatically selected for installation during the scan for available updates. After the scan has completed, click "Review and Install Updates" and then click "Install Now".

12. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect and http://help.msu.edu/virus/windowsupdates to learn how to keep your computer protected so you are not infected or hacked again. Also, visit http://help.msu.edu/virus to stay informed on new threats, fixes, patches, etc.

For Further Assistance

If running this tool does not remedy the virus problems on your system, we recommend you call a local computer repair facility (we suggest MSU Computer Repair at 353-5266, located in 120 Computer Center, hours 9-5 M-F) to make an appointment to have the computer repaired. There will be a charge for these services.
