Overview

This document will help you to configure your compatible Mozilla Thunderbird E-mail client to work with the mail.msu.edu E-mail system.

Compatible Mozilla Thunderbird versions: 2.0.0.x

Step 1: Account Settings

  • Open Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • Click on the Tools pulldown menu.
  • Select "Account Settings"

Step 2: Add your Account

  • Click on the "Add Account" button.

Step 3: New Account Wizard (1)

  • Make sure "Email account" is selected.
  • Click "Next"

Step 4: New Account Wizard (2)

  • In the Your Name text field, enter in your full name.
  • In the Email Address text field, enter in your MSU E-mail account (ie: sparty@msu.edu).
  • Click "Next"

Step 5: New Account Wizard (3)

  • Select the "POP" option bubble.
  • Enter mail.msu.edu in the Incoming Server text field.
  • Enter mail.msu.edu in the Outgoing Server text field.
  • Click "Next"

Step 6: New Account Wizard (4)

  • Click "Next"

Step 7: New Account Wizard (5)

  • Click "Next"

Step 8: New Account Wizard (6)

  • Click "Finish"

Step 9: Outgoing Settings Configuration

  • Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)"
  • Highlight the "mail.msu.edu" account there and click on "Edit"

Step 10: Outgoing Settings Configuration

  • Enter "mail.msu.edu" in the Description and Server Name fields.
  • Select "SSL"
  • Click "OK"

Step 11: Incoming Server Configuration

  • Click on "Server Settings" in the category list on the left.
  • Click to check the "Use secure connection (SSL)" check box under the Server Settings section.
  • Although not required, it is recommended that you check the following options:
    • Leave messages on server
    • Until I delete or move them from Inbox
  • Verify that your settings are similar to the following and click OK.
  • You are now ready to send and receive E-mail.
