How to Clear The Cookies and Cache in Your Internet Browser - TB10235

This article explains how to clear the cache and delete cookies for the most common internet browsers.
Note: This article assumes that you are using the most up-to-date version of your chosen browser. For assistance with older versions you will need to contact the browser developer directly.

Firefox - Windows Vista/7/8 and OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)/10.7 (Lion)/10.8 (Mountain Lion)/10.9 (Mavericks)

  1. Click on the "Menu" icon, the three horizontal bars in the top right corner of the browser.
  2. Select "Options" (Windows) or "Preferences" (OS X).
  3. Select "Privacy" from the icons along the top.
  4. Select the "clear your recent history" link.
  5. For "Time range to clear:", choose "Everything"
  6. Expand the "Details" area if necessary by clicking on the arrow pointing downward. If it is already expanded it will point upward.
  7. In the pop up window, check "Cache", "Cookies", and anything else you'd like to clean.
  8. Click "Clear Now".
  9. Restart your browser.
    Note: OS X users: Ensure the browser is fully closed before restarting. This can be done by selecting "Quit Firefox" from the "Chrome" drop-down menu along the top menu bar, by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting "Quit", or by using keyboard shortcut "command+Q".

Google Chrome - Windows Vista/7/8 and OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)/10.7 (Lion)/10.8 (Mountain Lion)/10.9 (Mavericks)

  1. Click on the menu, the three horizontal bars in the top right corner of the browser.
  2. Select "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select "Show advanced settings..." at the bottom of the window.
  4. Under the "Privacy" header, click the "Clear browsing data..." button.
  5. For "Obliterate the following items from:", select "the beginning of time".
  6. Ensure "Browsing history", "Cookies and other site and plug-in data", and "Cached images and files" are selected. Select any other options as desired.
  7. Click the "Clear browsing data" button.
  8. Restart your browser.
    Note: OS X users: Ensure the browser is fully closed before restarting. This can be done by selecting "Quit Chrome" from the "Chrome" drop-down menu along the top menu bar, by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting "Quit", or by using keyboard shortcut "command+Q".

Safari - OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)/10.9 (Mavericks)

  1. Click on "Safari" from the menu bar along the top of the screen.
  2. Select "Preferences..."
  3. Select the "Privacy" tab along the top of the new window.
  4. Click the "Remove All Website Data..." button.
  5. Click the "Remove Now" button when prompted.
  6. Restart your browser.
    Note: Ensure the browser is fully closed before restarting. This can be done by selecting "Quit Safari" from the "Safari" drop-down menu along the top menu bar, by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting "Quit", or by using keyboard shortcut "command+Q".

Safari - OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)/10.7 (Lion)

  1. Click on "Safari" from the menu bar along the top of the screen.
  2. Select "Empty Cache" from the drop-down menu."
  3. Select "Empty".
  4. Restart your browser.
    Note: Ensure the browser is fully closed before restarting. This can be done by selecting "Quit Safari" from the "Safari" drop-down menu along the top menu bar, by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting "Quit", or by using keyboard shortcut "command+Q".

Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10, 11 - Windows Vista/7/8 (Desktop UI)

  1. Select the "Tools" menu (8) or the gear-shaped icon in the top right corner of the browser (9,10,11).
  2. Click on "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the new window, click "Delete..." under the "Browsing history" section.
  4. Ensure that "Temporary Internet files", "Cookies", and "History" are checked. Ensure "Preserve Favorites website data" is not checked. Select any other options as desired.
  5. Click the "Delete" button at the bottom.
  6. Click "OK" to close the options window and then restart the browser.

Internet Explorer 10, 11 - Windows 8 (Metro UI)

  1. Hover the mouse along the right-hand side of the screen or use keyboard shortcut "Windows+C" to bring up the Charms bar.
  2. Select "Internet Options".
  3. Under the "Delete Browsing History" header click the "Delete" button".
  4. Restart your browser.
    Note: Ensure the browser is completely closed before restarting. This can be done by hovering the mouse along the top of the window until the 'hand' icon appears, then dragging the window to the bottom of the screen, or by using the keyboard shortcut "Alt+F4".
